Winneba Fire Station Responded to Fire in New Winneba with Bare Hands

Image
A disturbing scene unfolded in New Winneba on Wednesday, as fire officers from the Winneba Fire Station responded to a raging fire with no equipment, relying solely on their bare hands to assist. The blaze gutted a five-bedroom house, but reports indicate that firefighters could not actively fight the fire due to a broken-down fire tender — which has reportedly been out of service for over three months. According to eyewitnesses,  The fire reportedly began in one of the rooms before spreading rapidly through the rest of the building.  He added that they alerted the Winneba Fire Service as soon as the fire broke out. However, officers allegedly arrived at the scene in a private car and on a motorcycle instead of a fire tender, leaving the crowd frustrated and helpless as the flames spread. With no functioning fire truck on-site, there was little they could do to stop the flames. It has emerged that fire tenders at nearby stations like Apam and Agona Swedru are also out of servi...

Traditional leaders hold key to ending illegal mining – Sulemana Braimah

Image
The Executive Director of the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), Sulemana Braimah, has said only traditional leaders can play a decisive role in ending illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, in the country. According to him, the menace cannot be eradicated through government policies and programmes alone. He explained that the involvement of chiefs, particularly those in mining communities, is crucial to achieving lasting results in the fight against illegal mining. "I at this point will believe that our chiefs perhaps have much more to do than even maybe the politicians. I honestly believe that some of our very influential chiefs, the chiefs that we hold in high esteem, if they are to get up one day to say enough is enough, no more illegal mining or even mining on my land, whether people have concessions, large scale, medium or small scales, if some of these chiefs should get up and say for the next one month, I dont want mining on my land, I believe that you have n...

However, Emmanuel Kwesi Aboagye Essibu, a concerned youth of Effutu, social activist, and media personality, has responded with a challenge to the MCE’s call for unity, insisting that true change must begin from the top leadership. In his response, Emmanuel highlighted the growing awareness among Effutu citizens that key cultural events — including the famous Fancy Dress and the iconic Aboakyer Festival — are heavily influenced by political interests at high levels. The ongoing dispute within the Fancy Dress Federation, he noted, remains unresolved ...

Ghana AIDS Commission Alarms as Youth Abandon Condoms

Image
The Ghana AIDS Commission (GAC) is sounding the alarm over a disturbing trend: decreasing condom use among young people, even as HIV infections continue to rise. According to Isaiah Doe Kwao, Director of Research, Monitoring & Evaluation at GAC, condoms are still readily available, but many youths are becoming complacent about their sexual health. Some believe HIV is no longer deadly or choose “going raw” (unprotected sex) for the “feel.”  The Commission also notes that many young people now prioritize preventing pregnancy over protecting against HIV and other infections. This growing preference for emergency contraceptives over condoms is seen as a dangerous shift in behavior.  GAC warns that this trend could undo years of progress in HIV prevention. To counter it, they are urging: - Intensified public education on correct and consistent condom use   - Campaigns to reinforce the message of dual protection (protecting against both pregnancy and infections) ...

Image
A young man’s life has been turned upside down after being defrauded of GHS 33,000 by someone he once called a friend — Kwame Obed Atta. Kwame approached him years ago, claiming he needed capital to start a business. Trusting his story, the victim took a loan from UEW Credit Union in his own name and handed the money over to help. Sadly, it was all a scam. Kwame never started any business — instead, he used the funds for online fraud and disappeared from town immediately after receiving the money. Despite being deceived, the victim worked tirelessly to repay the loan. He traced Kwame, seized a vehicle he was using, and sold it to reduce the debt. Yet, due to interest and time, the loan has risen again to GHS 28,000. The case has since been officially reported to the Winneba Police Station, and Kwame Obed Atta has been declared wanted. The victim has provided all necessary evidence, including bank records and reports, and now seeks public support — both in helping locate Kwame and...
