Tragedy in Assin North: Farmer Drowns While Trying to Secure Loan for Son’s Education

A 50-year-old farmer, Kwaku Agyei, has tragically drowned in the River Fum in the Assin North District of the Central Region while attempting to swim across in the early hours of the morning.

According to reports, the incident occurred around 4:30am as Kwaku Agyei was heading to his cocoa farm at Sowodadiem near Assin Dansame. He was scheduled to meet a purchasing clerk to seek financial assistance in the form of a loan to buy school supplies for his son, who had just gained admission to Senior High School.

The River Fum is typically crossed using a canoe that carries passengers in turns due to its limited capacity. However, unwilling to wait for his turn, Kwaku opted to swim across the river — a decision that proved fatal, as he drowned before reaching the other side.

The heartbreaking incident has left the community in shock and mourning, especially given the circumstances surrounding his journey — a father's desperate attempt to support his child's education.

Authorities are yet to recover the body as local divers and residents join efforts to retrieve him from the river.
