UEW MUST ESTABLISH A FACULTY DEDICATED TO TEACHING AND PROMOTING THE IDEOLOGIES OF DR KWAME NKRUMAH
At the 2026 Independence Day celebration in Winneba, which marked Ghana’s 69th independence anniversary, Nathaniel Papa Acheampong, the Effutu Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress and a government appointee, called on the University of Education, Winneba to establish a dedicated center or faculty to promote and teach the principles, values, and ideologies of Kwame Nkrumah to both current and future generations.
According to him, the vision, leadership philosophy, and Pan-African ideals of Ghana’s first President remain crucial to the country’s development and must be intentionally preserved through academic study and national discourse. He emphasized that young people must be given the opportunity to learn about Nkrumah’s philosophy of self-reliance, African unity, and national development through structured academic programs.Mr. Acheampong noted that during his presidency, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah played a pivotal role in expanding higher education in Ghana by establishing key institutions that continue to shape the nation’s intellectual and professional development. These include the University of Ghana, the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, the University of Cape Coast, and the University of Education, Winneba.
He further pointed out that the South Campus of the University of Education, Winneba was originally known as the Kwame Nkrumah Ideological Institute, an institution created to train and educate people on political philosophy, leadership vision, and commitment to African liberation.
Mr. Acheampong therefore believes that re-establishing a center or faculty dedicated to Nkrumah’s ideology at UEW would not only honor the legacy of Ghana’s founding leader but also help deepen civic education, patriotism, and national consciousness among students and the wider public.
He expressed hope that the proposal would spark a national dialogue involving government, academia, and civil society, with the ultimate aim of ensuring that the ideas and philosophies of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah continue to guide Ghana’s development agenda.
According to him, institutionalizing the study of Nkrumah’s ideology would strengthen leadership training, promote critical thinking about Ghana’s political history, and inspire future generations to uphold the values of unity, independence, and self-determination that formed the foundation of the nation.
