Prof. Mahama Elected NDC Parliamentary Candidate for Tamale Central By-Election

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has elected Prof. Alidu Seidu Mahama as its parliamentary candidate for the upcoming Tamale Central by-election, scheduled for September 30, 2025.

Prof. Mahama, a respected academic and former Head of the Department of Political Science at the University of Ghana, was among twelve aspirants cleared to contest in the NDC primaries held on September 6, 2025. His candidacy received significant support, notably from the Progressive Youth Alliance, a group comprising his former students, who endorsed him as the ideal successor to the late Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed.

The Tamale Central seat became vacant following the tragic death of Dr. Mohammed in a helicopter crash on August 6, 2025. Prof. Mahama's election is seen as a step towards continuing Dr. Mohammed's legacy and addressing the developmental needs of the constituency.

The Electoral Commission has set the by-election for September 30, 2025. As the NDC's candidate, Prof. Mahama is expected to leverage his extensive experience in academia and public service to appeal to the electorate.

His campaign is anticipated to focus on unity, development, and the continuation of the late MP's initiatives, aiming to secure the confidence and votes of the Tamale Central constituents.
