NPP Calls on IGP to Investigate Azorka's Remarks at Akwatia By-Election

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has formally requested the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to investigate comments made by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Vice Chairman, Chief Sofo Azorka, during the Akwatia by-election on September 2, 2025.

Azorka allegedly stated that if he had encountered Minority Leader, Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, at the NDC party office, “a by-election would be held in Effutu,” implying a threat to the Effutu MP.

The NPP contends that such statements constitute a threat to the safety of a sitting Member of Parliament and undermine democratic processes. They have urged the Ghana Police Service to summon Azorka for questioning and to take appropriate legal action.

As of now, neither Chief Sofo Azorka nor the NDC has issued an official response to the NPP's concerns. The situation underscores the heightened political sensitivities in Ghana’s electoral landscape and the importance of maintaining decorum and mutual respect among political parties.
