Grandma Arrested for Allegedly Poisoning Two Grandchildren with Cake

A shocking incident in São Francisco, in the eastern region of Brazil, has left a family reeling after the arrest of a 59‑year‑old grandmother. She is alleged to have baked a cake that poisoned her two granddaughters, one of whom has sadly died, while the other is recovering from milder symptoms.

- The accused is identified as Izabel Cardoso de Andrade, aged 59.

- The incident reportedly occurred while her granddaughters were visiting during the summer holidays.

- The cake was consumed by both children; the nine‑year‑old became gravely ill almost immediately, while the 11‑year‑old who ate less of the cake had less severe symptoms.

- Even the family cat, which licked or ingested some of the cake, died, reinforcing suspicions of poisoning. [1]

- Tests on the cake revealed presence of terbufos, a toxic pesticide that attacks the central nervous system when ingested in sufficient amounts.

- Authorities are working to determine whether the poisoning was intentional or an accident.

-The suspect has allegedly delayed seeking medical help for the seriously affected grandchild.

- The grandmother is in custody pending further investigation.

- One child has died; the other is alive and receiving medical care.

- Was there motive behind this act, if intentional?

- How did the terbufos get into the cake?

- Were there signs earlier that something was wrong with the ingredients used?

- Will the surviving child recover fully?

This case raises serious concerns about food safety, elderly caregiving responsibilities, and the oversight required in family settings. We’ll continue to follow up and bring you updates as more information is made public.
