PARTICIPATING IN TRADITIONAL RITES IS NOT DEVILISH - STOP MISJUDGING OUR CULTURE

Akonfenahemaa of Agona Nyakrom Traditional Area, Nana Hemaa Ekua Nkrumah II has called on Ghanaians, especially the younger generation, to stop misjudging traditional festivals and rituals as evil or “devilish.” She emphasized that participating in festivals, including the pouring of libation and honoring forefathers, is deeply rooted in cultural identity and respect—not idol worship.

She made these passionate remarks during an exclusive interview with EKAEMEDIA at the Tufuhen’s Palace as part of the ongoing Nyakrom Akwambo Festival 2025, which started on 2nd August and ends on 10th August,2025.

She explained that customs are traditional practices or beliefs handed down from generation to generation and play a vital role in preserving a community’s identity and values. Examples include: pouring libation, greeting elders respectfully, wearing traditional attire during ceremonies, or performing specific rites during funerals or naming ceremonies.

“Today, many people think that celebrating our festivals and pouring libation to remember those who fought for our communities is demonic. But that’s very wrong and misleading,” she said. “Even in the Bible, there are festivals held in remembrance of the dead and of great events. Culture is not evil misunderstanding it is.”

Nanahemaa urged parents, churches, and schools to help teach the youth the value of Ghana’s rich traditions, stressing that culture is part of a nation’s strength.

She concluded by encouraging all to join this year’s Akwambo festivities in unity and peace, reminding the nation that *“you cannot separate a people from their culture and expect them to grow.”*
