Agona Asafo Akwambo Festival Preparations: 18 Injured, 5 Critical
A festive atmosphere in Agona Asafo in the Agona East District of Ghana's Central Region, turned tragic on Friday when a Kia truck loaded with coconuts ran into a crowd during a float procession.
The incident left 18 people injured, with five in critical condition (3 boys, 2 girls).
According to information gathered by EKAEMEDIA, the float was part of pre-festival activities ahead of the 2025 Agona Asafo Akwambo Festival, scheduled from September 2 to 7.
In an interview with the Assembly Member for the Agona Asafo Electoral Area, Hon. Ismael Odoom, popularly known as Obiaa Bedidi, explained that the football gala, which was organized by the children of the late Dr. Kwesi Botwei to honor him, was part of the Pre-Akwanbo festival activities.
On that fateful Friday, children and grandchildren of the late Dr. Botwei presented the gala trophy to the town's chiefs ahead of the final match, scheduled for Saturday. They then led a float through the streets to showcase the trophy and build excitement within the community.
Tragedy struck when the Kia vehicle, while moving through the crowd, lost control and ran into the gathering. Eyewitnesses say the driver and his mate attempted to flee the scene immediately after the crash, but some of the youth chased and caught them, severely assaulting them.
The situation was calmed only after police intervened and rescued the two, who, along with the injured victims, were taken to the Swedru Government Hospital for treatment.
Hon. Ismael Odoom added that the football final will be postponed, as some of the players were among the injured. He assured the public that the final would be played at a later, appropriate time. However, he emphasized that the main Akwambo Festival will continue as planned, as it is a sacred annual tradition to honor the forefathers of the community.
Police investigations into the incident are ongoing.
