Winneba–Apam Highway Crash: Taxi Driver and Three Schoolchildren Confirmed Dead
On Monday, 23rd June 2025, at exactly 4:24 PM, fire rescuers from the Winneba Fire Station swiftly responded to a fatal head-on collision at Nantwibuw, a section of the Winneba–Apam highway. The accident involved a Hyundai Jett (CR 748-20) and a Toyota RAV4 (GN 5507-18).
The rescue team, led by STNO II Nyarko, arrived at 4:29 PM and successfully retrieved the lifeless body of the trapped taxi driver, identified as Godfred, popularly known as Dinho. His body was handed over to the Ghana Police Service at the scene.
Prior to the arrival of the fire crew, other victims—mainly students from Uncle Rich and St. Paul schools—had already been transported to the Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital. A follow-up assessment by the rescue team confirmed a total of seven (7) casualties, with four (4) in critical condition.
As of the end of Monday, three (3) of the students involved in the crash have sadly passed away, bringing the total death toll to four (4)—including the taxi driver, Dinho.
Eyewitness reports suggest that the crash may have resulted from wrongful overtaking. The Hyundai Jett was completely mangled beyond repair, while the RAV4 suffered significant front-end damage, including to the windscreen and engine area.
Authorities are continuing investigations into the exact cause of the accident. Meanwhile, the Ghana National Fire Service and road safety officials are strongly urging drivers to avoid wrongful overtaking and adhere strictly to traffic regulations to prevent further loss of life.
