"Take Action Against Growing Drug Abuse Issue in Effutu" - Hon. Alhaji Sanni Mohammad Urges Effutu Omanhene Neenyi Ghartey VII


The Assemblyman for Abasraba North/Zongo electoral area, Hon. Alhaji Sanni Mohammad, has indeed raised a critical concern by urging Omanhene of Effutu, Neenyi Ghartey VII, to take action against the growing drug abuse issue in Effutu, especially in the Zongo communities. This plea, made during the MCE's stakeholders meeting on the siting, construction, and operationalization of a model 24-hour economy market in Winneba as part of the Government’s flagship programs, highlights the need for collective effort to address the devastating impact of substance abuse on the youth.

Substance abuse among Ghanaian youth has reached alarming levels, with over 10% of the population aged 15-64 having used illegal drugs. Cannabis is the most commonly used substance, followed by other substances like tramadol, Kush, methamphetamine etc. The consequences of drug abuse are far-reaching, including increased crime rates, school dropouts, and economic burdens on families.

Drug abuse severely affects the physical and mental health of the youth, leading to:
Addiction and Dependence: Opioid abuse can cause long-term damage to individuals and society.
Mental Health Issues: Substance abuse is linked to anxiety, depression, psychosis, and even death.
Social and Economic Consequences: Drug abuse can lead to increased crime rates, school dropouts, and economic burdens on families.

To combat the growing drug abuse issue, experts recommend:
Stronger Drug Regulations and Law Enforcement: Strict regulation and monitoring of opioid sales, with severe punishments for illegal traffickers.
Public Awareness Campaigns: Education on drug dangers should be included in school curricula.
Community-Driven Interventions: Collaboration between government, families, schools, and communities to provide support and rehabilitation services.

Alhaji Sanni Mohammad's plea serves as a reminder that collective action is necessary to mitigate the devastating impact of substance abuse on Effutu youth and ensure a brighter future for our town.   The Agonaman Traditional Council has firmly addressed recent developments in Agona Abodom, declaring that there is currently no officially recognized chief in the town. At a press conference held at the Agona Nyakrom Palace, the Council described the individual currently parading himself as chief of Agona Abodom as an imposter, emphasizing that he has not been accepted or sworn in by the Agona Nyakrom Traditional Council, as custom requires.
